One of the hardest parts of AI search optimization is knowing what you’re missing. You can see your own visibility scores, but that doesn’t tell you what your competitors are doing that you’re not.
We’ve added sitemap analysis to the competitors page. Knowatoa now crawls the sitemaps for your site and your competitors, then cross-references those pages against what AI engines are actually citing in their answers.
Site Coverage Comparison
When you visit a competitor comparison page, you’ll see a new section that shows how much of each site’s content AI engines are finding useful. For each brand, we show the total number of sitemap pages, how many of those pages have been cited by AI models, and the resulting coverage percentage.
This is a quick way to spot whether a competitor has better AI coverage than you do, and by how much. If they have 12% coverage and you’re at 4%, that’s a concrete gap you can start closing.
How it works
We parse sitemaps automatically, including sitemap index files and gzipped sitemaps. If a site lists multiple sitemaps in their robots.txt, we follow all of them. This means you get a complete picture even for larger sites with thousands of pages.
The parser checks robots.txt first for Sitemap directives, then falls back to the standard /sitemap.xml location. Discovered URLs are cached so subsequent refreshes are fast.
Content Opportunities
The companion “Competitive Content Opportunities” table shows specific questions where a competitor appears in AI search results but you don’t, or where they rank higher. Each row includes the question, search volume, your position versus theirs, and the gap. The list is sorted by search volume so the biggest opportunities float to the top.
Together, the coverage comparison and content opportunities show you what they have that you don’t, and where to start.
