One of the most requested features from our MCP users has been the ability to analyze trends over time. We’ve now added historical date range support to all analytical MCP methods, so you can answer questions like “How did my mention rate change from last month?” directly from your AI assistant.
What’s New
Every analytical MCP method now accepts date ranges and returns period-over-period comparisons. Ask your AI assistant to:
- Compare visibility across months: “Show me how my mention rate changed from September to October”
- Track sentiment trends: “Has my brand sentiment improved over the last 30 days?”
- Analyze citation changes: “Which sources cited us more this month compared to last month?”
- Monitor competitor shifts: “How did my competitors’ visibility change over the past quarter?”
- Identify prompt performance: “Which questions gained or lost mentions in the last two weeks?”
- Spot AI service trends: “Which LLM showed the biggest improvement for my brand this month?”
How It Works
When you ask your AI assistant a time-based question, it automatically passes date parameters to Knowatoa’s MCP server. You get back current metrics, previous period metrics, and the change between them.
For example, asking “How did my visibility change from September to October?” returns:
json
{
"mention_rate": {
"current": 42.5,
"previous": 35.0,
"change_points": 7.5,
"change_percent": 21.4
}
}
Every metric includes: - Current: The value for your requested period - Previous: The value for the comparison period - Change Points: Absolute difference (percentage points for rates) - Change Percent: Relative percentage change
Which Methods Support It
All analytical MCP methods now support historical analysis:
-
get_visibility- Mention rates and positions over time -
get_sentiment- Sentiment scores and bucket counts over time -
get_citations- Citation sources and categories over time -
get_competitors- Competitor metrics over time -
get_competitor_sentiment- Brand-by-brand sentiment comparison -
get_series_performance- AI service performance (ChatGPT, Perplexity, etc.) -
get_question_performance- Per-question and per-prompt trends -
get_negative_mentions- Negative sentiment diagnostics over time
Flexible Comparison Periods
By default, Knowatoa compares your requested period to an equal-length period immediately before it. But you can also specify custom comparison periods if you want to compare specific months, campaigns, or events.
Your AI assistant handles all of this automatically when you phrase your questions naturally. Just ask about time periods and changes, and it figures out the right date parameters.
Already Using MCP?
If you’ve already connected Knowatoa to Claude, ChatGPT, or another AI assistant, you don’t need to do anything. The historical analysis features work automatically with your existing connection.
Just start asking time-based questions and your AI assistant will return the period-over-period data.

Why This Matters
AI search visibility changes constantly as content evolves, competitor strategies shift, and AI models update. Historical analysis helps you:
- Measure optimization impact: Did your content changes improve mentions?
- Track competitive position: Are competitors gaining or losing ground?
- Identify trends: Which questions are getting better or worse over time?
- Validate strategy: Is your AI search strategy working?
With period-over-period reporting in MCP, you can get these insights without leaving your AI assistant or building custom reports.
